Daily Devotional: Genesis 46:1-34

Joseph’s family arrives in Egypt, seventy people altogether, and settle in Goshen. Reading through the genealogy provided in Chapter 46, I recognize that the wives of Joseph are Egyptian women. Yet his sons, Manasseh and Ephraim—half Egyptian—are counted with the house of Israel without reservation. Not only are Joseph’s sons half-Egyptian, they are descendants of an Egyptian priest—someone who instigates worship to the false gods of Egypt. Israel was never pure genetically. There have always been elements of the surrounding nations in her ancestry, yet God never discounts Israel as His people because there is Egyptian, Canaanite, or Midianite blood. Further, since the nations are present in Israel, the redemption and elevation of Israel has always necessarily meant the redemption and elevation of all nations. Indeed, all nations are blessed through Israel. God has not chosen a household, Israel, to the neglect of the world. He has chosen a household for the good of the world.
