We saw God create the world. We saw Him create humankind in His image. We saw Him promise Eve that her descendants would trample those of the serpent. We saw the seed of the serpent strike the heel of the seed of the woman as Cain killed Abel. We saw the seed of the woman bruise the heel of the seed of the serpent as Cain was exiled and Seth born. Today, we see the genealogical record of the family that typifies the seed of the woman and glean some important details from the historical data.
Genesis 5:1-32

From Adam to Noah (v. 1-32)
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.
When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
Seth lived one hundred and five years, and became the father of Enosh. Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan. Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
Kenan lived seventy years, and became the father of Mahalalel. Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Jared. Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and became the father of Enoch. Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and became the father of Lamech. Then Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and became the father of a son. Now he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed.” Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters. So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.
Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
We can glean some interesting details from genealogies. God gave us the whole Bible to read together and exposit, so no body of believers should ever skip genealogies. When we skip part of the Bible because it seems boring, when preachers never teach the genealogies, we see that they are likely more interested in trying to be profound rather than teaching the whole counsel of Scripture. There are a few things in the genealogy from Adam to Noah that are of great import.
Longevity in Christ
The first things that strikes me about this genealogy are the longer lifespans. Averaging about 900 years, people lived a long time. Moses gives no explanation as to why. He simply states it as a matter of historical fact. The presence of genealogies in Genesis 1-11 show us that, though Moses is writing in a myth-type genre, he intends this record to be taken as literal history. Otherwise, he would not record historical data like genealogies, birthdates, and death-dates for posterity. Yet, he enters precise historical data here. Ergo, Genesis 1-11 is literal history.
I tend to agree, here, with the majority of Christian scholars who believe the proximity to Eden affects longevity of life. When the prophets foretell that such longevity will be restored with the coming of the Messiah (cf. Isaiah 65:20), they are describing a return to Eden under the new federal head. Run a quick internet search and you’ll see that since Christ’s incarnation, life expectancy has been slowly increasing just as the prophets predicted. While materialists cry that this is proof of evolution, we realize that a promise was made in ancient times. Christ has come to establish His kingdom, and we see the proof in the fulfilled promise of longer life expectancy worldwide.
The mystery of Enoch
Enoch is on the earth for less time than the other patriarchs. His departure from this earth is described differently. Enoch lived 365 years, walked with God and was no more—because God took him. Enoch is the only patriarch who is described as walking with God. Similarly, he is the only patriarch who seemingly does not experience death. God took him, and he simply was no more. God took him at a relatively young age. I don’t feel comfortable speculating too much here. We do know from the text that Enoch was a godly man. He did what was pleasing in God’s sight. He walked with God. What we don’t know is his mode of rapture from this earth. We simply know that God took him and he was no more. Whether God took him up because he was too good for this wretched plane or his body died at a relatively young age and Moses is trying to be respectful, we cannot know.
Because he is one of the two who seem not to experience death (Elijah is the second), there is much speculation that Enoch may be one of the two foretold prophets in Revelation 11. Since these prophets are clearly identifiable as the church of Christ, it is not healthy to draw such speculation that forces us to add to the Bible what is not there. It is also assumed by some that if anyone could live a righteous enough life, he may escape bodily death. This is not the case. Enoch is listed with a few patriarchs in Hebrews 11 who qualified as a great cloud of witnesses. Everyone else in the preacher’s list dies a physical death. If Enoch did not experience physical death, God had other reasons. Some assume that Enoch is to serve as an example of rapture, not any rapture but a secret rapture of the saints at the end to avoid the destruction of the earth. Not only does God promise never to destroy the earth after the flood (cf. Genesis 8:21-22), but there is no textual evidence of any kind of secret rapture, only textual appropriation conceived and argued for by groups who do not read the Bible expositorily or contextually. I believe we should read this as Moses wrote it—as matter of fact without trying to create a philosophy that is not present in the text. Enoch walked with God and was no more because God took him. Nothing more. Nothing less. Death is a consequence of the fall. Nearly everyone must experience it. Enoch and Elijah are the only exceptions. Let us not forget that the only perfect person to ever live, Jesus, experienced a worse physical death than anyone else has or will. Many people want to be like Enoch and escape. I think it is probably better to be like Christ. To live is Christ. To die is gain.
Generational overlap
When Noah is born, only Adam and Seth have died. There are eight generations on the earth concurrently. This means the stories of creation handed to Noah are not far removed from Adam. Noah got to hear stories from Enosh, his great, great great, great, great, grandfather. When Shem, Ham, and Japheth are born, Methuselah, their great grandfather, is their longest living relative. Methuselah will die in or just before the Great Deluge according to his age as presented in this genealogy—1,656 years after Adam began counting his age. Lamech, Methuselah’s son, will die five years before Methuselah. So, later when God identifies Noah as the only righteous one on the earth, He means that the other patriarchs who typify the seed of the woman are no more. Noah’s identification as righteous has to do with his spiritual ancestry, not his ability to be righteous in the likeness of God—he proves he is unable when he gives in to debauchery and exposes himself after the Great Flood. So, the Flood Narrative is consistent with God’s promise in Genesis 3. God saves Noah and his family as a strike to the heads of the serpent and his spiritual children. Noah is a type of the seed of the woman—the living and redeemed nation.
When Noah’s sons are born, there are only four generations on the earth concurrently. The effects of sin are already shortening lifespans. While there is longevity in Christ, the sin curse shortens life and generations. This life is too short to treat other generations harshly. We see lifespans ranging to 900 years and think it much.
