Daily Devotional: Romans 4:9-25

Remember, Paul’s audience is Roman––Greek and gentile. Paul has been explaining the Law. God gave the Law to the Jews. The Christ was Jewish. The Jews are considered the people of Yahweh. So, Paul answers a question that was doubtless on the minds of those reading his gospel message, “What about us? We are not Jews? We do not have the Law? We have never been subject to the Law. Abraham is not our forefather. We are not circumcised.”

Faith was credited to Abraham apart from his circumcision, not because of it. Therefore, it is granted through faith, not Law. Abraham is the forefather of all those who have faith, whether or not they were circumcised or born of the Jewish Law. God is not only the God of the Jews, but of the whole world. Jesus was delivered because of all our transgressions and raised because of all our justification.

Paul does not state that anyone need to become a person of the Law or become circumcised in order to become a Christian. He does not encourage gentiles to begin observing the feasts or pretend to be what they are not. Those who are not Jews need not become so in order to worship God and be justified. Abraham was credited righteousness apart from his circumcision. Justification is, therefore, by grace and through faith.

So, we will often hear teachers teach gentiles that gentiles must submit to Jewish Law in order to please God and somehow earn God’s blessing. This is not true. It is true that we should believe God and in the work God is doing. Our belief is credited to us as righteousness, and His true law is written on our hearts. God is the one at work, here—not Jews, not gentiles, not any manner of religiosity–God alone. Justification has always been through faith, never Law or works.

  • Agreed. Two people of God doesn’t make sense and don’t read that anywhere in the Bible.
