Therefore, since justification is by grace alone through faith alone, we have peace with God through Christ. There seem to be many today, even of the household of faith, who believe God is interested in war against people. Through Christ, He has declared peace and is saving a people by grace through faith for Himself. Those who are in Christ have peace with God. Those who are not in Christ do not have peace with God. This is why many who claim not to believe in the existence of God are still so militant against him. How could they be at such enmity if they truly did not see Him?
If we are in Christ and are justified by grace through faith, we exult in hope of the glory of God—we are overjoyed despite life’s circumstances, even tribulation. We know that God is working things together for good and that tribulation sanctifies us.
Even though we were unable to help ourselves, here meaning justify ourselves under some kind of religious law, Christ died for the ungodly. He died at the right time, at the perfect time. We know that God’s love is real because it is unconditional. Christ died for us while we were lost in our sin—not because we did anything to earn justification. If we were justified through his death, then we shall be saved from the wrath of God by His life.
Paul has not started a new letter after finishing chapters 1 and 2. This is the same letter, and Paul is talking about the unconditional justification of those who suppress the truth in their unrighteousness. He is talking about the unconditional justification of the homosexual, wicked, greedy, envious, murderous, deceitful, malicious, gossiping, slandering, arrogant, boastful, and disobedient to parents (Chapter 1). He is talking about the unconditional justification of those who passes judgment in order to condemn others despite their hypocrisy. I wonder why so many religious people are trying to preach the gospel as if it is such bad news when Christ came to seek and save the lost—to redeem the world from sin. God is in a good mood. The gospel is good news. The world is being saved, not destroyed.
