Daily Devotional: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Paul, and those with him when he visited Thessalonica, shared the gospel free of monetary charge in the midst of great oppression while they were there. The Thessalonian church is now made up of people who believed despite oppression from both Jews and gentiles in their city. Paul is greatly encouraged and praises the church.

When Paul writes about pleasing God rather than men, here, he means concerning the preaching of God’s word and presenting of the gospel message. He is not interested in tickling ears, flattering people, or getting anything from people. The word of God cannot be changed because of people’s imperfect and unrighteous sensibilities. As we continue reading, we see that Paul presented the gospel gently, tenderly caring for people in Thessalonica. He had a fond affection for the people and imparted not only the gospel but his own life to them. He did not want to be a burden on them. In this way, he sought to also please his fellow man. So, we cannot change the word of God to please ourselves or others, but we can care about others and develop a fondness for them.

Paul and those with him exhorted, encouraged, and implored the Thessalonians while they were in Thessalonica so that the local church would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls them into His own kingdom and glory. From this, we learn that (1) faith produces works—works that we are to exhort, encourage, and implore one another concerning. Works do not produce salvation but are the result of it. We also see that (2) God is the one who calls, and (3) He calls His chosen people (cf. 1:4) into a present kingdom. Paul’s view of the kingdom is present, not waiting for a future date. Too many are waiting to be raptured to a kingdom far above the earth, away from tribulation. Paul sees the kingdom as present on the earth and the glory of God as presently filling the earth. When God calls, He calls into a present kingdom—not an absent one. Christ is presently king.
